Cruelty or Kindness in degrees

When I am carrying something in the house that I am struggling with, I am always amused that my dog and cats don’t budge one iota to get out-of-the-way. They would be very surprised if I tripped over them because they don’t identify me walking by, as being a danger to them. They have never been kicked, pushed aside or moved out of the way in any unkind way. I am very proud of this. I have experienced the opposite for myself and animals so I am very amused and happy that it is not something that I perpetuate.

Cruelty can be in degrees. Thinking the fear or misery of someone else as humorous shows one is removed from compassion. It is never funny to me. There is no pleasure in any one’s discomfort. In fact, I feel people’s discomfort and wish to alleviate it in all ways. Even enjoying the slight discomfort of a loved one is the same root strain of gratuitous actions that play out in the world a billion times over.

The point is, that indifference or lack of kindness; as innocuous as it seems in the microcosm, is a reflection of the macrocosm. It is the same principle as; “if you want to see kindness in the world, show kindness to others” Teasing the dog, being amused by the misfortunes of others, wanting someone else to be punished, is tiny degrees of what plays out in the world in mass proportions.

If one wants to change the world, there is no need to go on the other side of the world and fight the noble fight for truth, justice and the American way. One can change the world in their own humble way by upholding integrity and kindness in their own little corner of the world. It is not so demonstrative, but much more effective.
